A type of train never seen before on the Cotswold Line will be travelling both ways along the route on Saturday, May 7.
Hastings Diesels’ unique preserved narrow-bodied diesel electric multiple unit, No 1001, is visiting the Cotswold Line working the Worcester Sauce DEMU railtour and tickets are still available for people to join the train at Oxford for the run to Worcester and back.
Due to tight clearances in tunnels, trains on services between Hastings and London were operated with trains specially built for the route for many years – 1001 is the only survivor from a fleet of trains ordered in the 1950s by British Railways’ Southern Region.
The railtour will leave its home station of Hastings at 07.17 and pick up passengers at major stations en route to Oxford, where it will depart at 10.54. It is due to arrive at Worcester Shrub Hill at 12.20.
The return journey will leave Worcester Shrub Hill at 16.50, reaching Oxford at 17.53, and is due to return to Hastings at 21.18.
Standard class tickets are still available to join the train at stations from Hastings to Reading priced £70, while the return fare from Oxford to Worcester is £50.
